Soul-Searching on LA GRACIOSA

There are very few beautiful sunny places left in the world that have not yet been marketed, developed and sold off to package-deal tourism. Fortunately, the Northern part of Lanzarote has so far resisted such overdevelopment, and the island of La Graciosa is yet even a further step towards genuine preservation of habitat and unspoilt paradise.

This gem of an island is totally free of cars, roads, tourists and boasts a population of only about 600, mostly all of which are located in the main village of CALETA DEL SEBO that can be reached by ferry boat from the Northernmost outpost of Lanzarote, ÓRZOLA. The latter, too, is one of our all-time favorite communities on the island, with authentic flair, relatively few tourists, great seafood restaurants serving the fresh catch of the day and the boat departing to and from La Graciosa several times a day.

So there is hardly anything more soothing to the soul than to sail forth from Órzola on one of the early departures to Caleta del Sebo to take full advantage of a day of solitude and soul-searching along La Graciosa's deserted yet enchanting coastline.

Leaving the boat at Caleta del Sebo, even if there are many passengers, it is noticeable how quickly everyone disperses in the vast openness and space of the small capital village and beyond. Numerous low-key eateries and outdoor cafes invite for a quiet stopover with Cafe con Leche, and with astonishingly colorful views of the small harbor, its vessels and their colors in sharp contrast to the blue sky and brown mountains of the FAMARA range in the distance.

Continuing along the shore in Caleta del Sebo it only takes a few minutes to reach the end of the community and to start exploring the vastness of the dunes leading to an extinct volcano called Montaña Amarilla near PLAYA FRANCESA.
What a sight! A small boat permanently anchored at this precious beach makes for a perfect backdrop to blue waters and skies, golden sand and the combination of  different shades of brown and green from the extinct volcano of Montaña Amarilla on La Graciosa and the mighty FAMARA RANGE on the main island.

There are a few other visitors around, but sparingly so, and all in search of the same rest, quiet, peace and solitude this very special and unique habitat has to offer.

Best to leave all references to modern civilization behind - as LA GRACIOSA invites us to forget for a day all modern-day worries including cellular phones, internet, email and beyond - to dive into true primitive bliss and harmony at this very charming outpost of life on Lanzarote - the true epitomy of all we love about this island, its peace, tranquility and enchanting solitude.
